Shot Peening Guide: Surface Strengthening & Fatigue Life

Shot Peening Guide: Surface Strengthening & Fatigue Life

Short answer: Shot peening bombards a part with small round shot so the surface yields in compression, creating a residual compressive layer that closes micro-cracks and can multiply fatigue life — essential for springs, gears, turbine blades and aircraft parts.

What Shot Peening Does

Each shot impact plastically deforms the surface, leaving a thin layer under residual compression. Because fatigue and stress-corrosion cracks start at the surface in tension, that compressive layer dramatically raises the safe load and life — the fatigue basis is in Metal Fatigue Endurance Limit and the SCC link in Stress Corrosion Cracking. It is a different job from Shot Blasting Vs Sandblasting, which only cleans and profiles the surface without inducing a beneficial stress state.

Media, Intensity and Coverage

Steel or ceramic round shot is thrown at controlled velocity; intensity (Almen strip) and coverage (percent of surface) are specified and measured, not guessed. Glass-bead peening gives a gentler finish plus mild strengthening; laser peening reaches deeper and more precisely for critical rotating parts. The process follows the same surface discipline as Metal Surface Treatment Guide and often follows Nitriding Vs Carburizing or Stress Relieving Vs Annealing for a combined effect.

Applications & Sourcing

Peening is specified for springs, gears, crankshafts, connecting rods, turbine and compressor blades, weld toes and landing-gear parts. HXSCO supplies the high-strength base material — Spring Steel Supplier strip, Alloy Steel Supplier bar, Titanium Supplier and Aluminum 7075 Properties forgings — and arranges peening to your Almen spec, with the material certificate per Mill Test Certificate Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is shot peening?

Shot peening fires small round shot at a part so the surface compresses, creating a residual compressive layer that closes micro-cracks and greatly extends fatigue life.

What is the difference between shot peening and shot blasting?

Shot blasting cleans and profiles the surface; shot peening deliberately induces a beneficial compressive stress layer to improve fatigue and corrosion-fatigue resistance.

Does shot peening improve fatigue life?

Yes. By putting the surface in compression, peening can multiply fatigue life for springs, gears, blades and other cyclic-load parts.

Do you supply peened or peenable parts?

Yes. HXSCO supplies high-strength base material and arranges shot peening to Almen specification with mill certificates.
