Short answer: Clinching joins two or more sheet-metal layers by pressing them into a die so the lower sheet flows plastically and interlocks with the upper sheet — forming a mechanical button without any rivet, screw, filler or heat. It is a fast, low-cost, clean joining method for coated and dissimilar sheets (steel-to-aluminium, pre-painted, galvanised) where spot welding would burn the coating or where riveting would need a hole and a secondary operation.
