Clinching Guide: Tool-Free Mechanical Joining for Sheet Metal

Clinching Guide: Tool-Free Mechanical Joining for Sheet Metal

Short answer: Clinching joins two or more sheet-metal layers by pressing them into a die so the lower sheet flows plastically and interlocks with the upper sheet — forming a mechanical button without any rivet, screw, filler or heat. It is a fast, low-cost, clean joining method for coated and dissimilar sheets (steel-to-aluminium, pre-painted, galvanised) where spot welding would burn the coating or where riveting would need a hole and a secondary operation.

What is clinching?

Pressure-formed mechanical interlock, no fastener or heat.

Clinching vs riveting?

Clinching needs no hole or rivet; faster, cleaner.

What sheets can be joined?

Steel, galvanised, aluminium and pre-painted sheets.

Is it watertight?

Not inherently — pair with sealant for a sealed joint.

Do you supply clinch stock?

HXSCO supplies coated and bare sheet suited to clinching.
