Tool Steels We Supply

Tool steel is high-carbon, high-alloy steel built to hold an edge, resist wear and survive repeated shock at hardness levels ordinary Carbon Steel Supplier en Alloy Steel Supplier grades cannot reach. We stock the four working families:

  • Cold-work (D2, A2, O1) — blanking, forming and trim dies, punches and shear blades. The D2/H13 trade-off is covered in H13 Vs D2 Tool Steel.
  • Hot-work (H13, H11) — die casting, forging and extrusion dies that see molten metal and thermal cycling; see Metal Extrusion Guide en Aluminum Die Casting Guide.
  • Mould steel (P20, 718, 2738) — pre-hardened 28–34 HRC plate for plastic injection moulds, polishable to a mirror finish.
  • High-speed steel (M2, M35) — drills, end mills, taps and form tools that stay hard at cutting temperature.

Sizes, Condition & Processing

We ship tool steel as plate (6–300 mm), flat bar, square and round bar (Ø10–500 mm), annealed (≈220 HB, machinable) or pre-hardened, plus finished blanks. We saw-cut, mill six faces, grind to size and heat-treat in vacuum to your target hardness — the quench and temper choices are laid out in Metal Heat Treatment Guide en Quenching Media Guide, and hardness is reported per Metal Hardness Testing Methods with conversions in Hardness Conversion Chart. Nitriding for extra die life follows Nitriding Vs Carburizing.

Machining annealed tool steel is slow and abrasive — plan feeds using Metal Machinability Guide, and specify die surfaces with Surface Roughness Ra Guide so polish and EDM finish expectations are unambiguous.

Applications & Quality

Our tool steel goes into stamping and blanking dies (see Metal Stamping Supplier), die-casting and extrusion tooling, plastic injection moulds, shear blades, punches, gauges and wear parts. Where wear beats every other requirement we also supply Wear Resistant Steel Supplier plate and Metal Hardfacing Guide overlay.

Every lot ships with an EN 10204 mill test certificate per Mill Test Certificate Guide, chemistry and hardness report, ultrasonic soundness on request per Metal Ndt Guide, and export-ready oiled and crated packing.

Veelgestelde vragen

What tool steel grades do you supply?

HXSCO supplies cold-work (D2, A2, O1), hot-work (H13, H11), pre-hardened mould steel (P20, 718, 2738) and high-speed steel (M2, M35) in plate, flat and round bar.

What is the difference between D2 and H13?

D2 is a cold-work steel with high chromium for wear resistance in blanking and forming dies; H13 is a hot-work Cr-Mo-V steel with far better thermal-shock and heat resistance for die casting and extrusion.

Do you supply pre-hardened mould steel?

Yes. P20 / 1.2311 and 718 mould plate ship pre-hardened at roughly 28–34 HRC, ready to machine and polish without further heat treatment.

Can you heat-treat and grind tool steel to size?

Yes. We vacuum harden and temper to your target hardness, then grind to finished dimensions, and report hardness with the mill certificate.

Do you supply tool steel with mill certificates?

Yes. Every lot ships with an EN 10204 mill test certificate covering chemistry and hardness, plus ultrasonic testing on request.
