Fretting Corrosion Guide: Causes at Contact Surfaces & How to Stop It

Fretting Corrosion Guide: Causes at Contact Surfaces & How to Stop It

Short answer: Fretting corrosion is surface damage from tiny repeated slip between two contacting surfaces — it generates oxide debris, pits and cracks at joints and fits, and is controlled by lubrication, interference fits, surface hardening and sealing the environment out.

Mechanism of Fretting

Micrometre-scale slip breaks protective films and exposes bare metal that oxidises; the debris (often red iron oxide) wedges in and abrades further. It is a cousin of Galvanic Corrosion Guide und Crevice Corrosion Stainless Steel, and accelerates in moist air — baseline defence is How To Prevent Metal Rust und Metal Corrosion Inhibitor Guide. Good finishes help, per Stainless Steel Surface Finishes.

Where It Occurs

Press fits, splines, bolted and riveted joints, bearing seats and electrical contacts — anywhere with vibration and low-amplitude motion. It appears in Metal Riveting Guide und Dissimilar Metal Welding Guide assemblies, and on Copper Supplier und Brass Supplier contacts. Cathodic protection context is in Cathodic Protection Guide.

Mitigation

Apply lubricants or sealants, use interference fits, harden or coat the surfaces (Nitriding Vs Carburizing, Metal Hardfacing Guide, Anodizing Vs Powder Coating), and keep moisture out. Certificate the surface condition per Mill Test Certificate Guide.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is fretting corrosion?

Surface damage from very small repeated relative slip between contacting surfaces, producing oxide debris, pits and sometimes cracks at joints and fits.

Where does fretting occur?

Press fits, splines, bolted/riveted joints, bearing seats and electrical contacts — anywhere with vibration and tiny motion.

How do you prevent fretting?

Lubricate or seal the interface, use interference fits, harden or coat the surfaces, and exclude moisture from the joint.

Is fretting the same as wear?

It is a wear-corrosion combination driven by micromotion and oxidation, so it is more aggressive than simple abrasive wear in the same joint.

Do you supply fretting-resistant finishes?

HXSCO supplies hardened, coated and anodised parts and can advise on surface treatments that resist fretting; tell us the duty.
