Cast Iron Guide: Grey, Ductile (SG) & Malleable Iron Grades & Uses

Cast Iron Guide: Grey, Ductile (SG) & Malleable Iron Grades & Uses

Short answer: Cast iron is iron-carbon-silicon with 2–4 % carbon, poured into moulds for parts where stiffness, wear resistance, damping and low cost beat high tensile strength. Grey iron’s graphite flakes damp vibration (engine blocks, machine beds); ductile (spheroidal-graphite) iron adds toughness and ductility (pipe, crankshafts, auto); malleable and white irons cover fittings and wear parts. Grade choice balances machinability, strength and shock resistance.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is cast iron?

Iron with 2-4% C + Si, poured for stiff/wear parts.

Grey vs ductile?

Grey damps vibration; ductile adds toughness/ductility.

What is SG iron?

Spheroidal-graphite (ductile) iron — tough and castable.

Is cast iron weldable?

With preheat and nickel electrodes, yes — carefully.

Do you supply cast iron?

HXSCO supplies grey/ductile iron stock and parts.
