Short answer: Zinc plating electrodeposits a thin, even zinc layer (5–25 µm) — ideal for fasteners and precision parts. Hot-dip galvanizing applies a thick, metallurgically bonded zinc coating (45–150 µm) — best for structures and outdoor steel that need decades of sacrificial protection.

The Two Zinc Processes
Both protect steel by sacrificing zinc, but the method differs. Zinc plating is electroplated in a bath; hot-dip galvanizing dips cleaned steel into molten zinc. The hot-dip route is detailed in Hot Dip Galvanizing Process and our Galvanized Steel Supplier programme.
Thickness, Coverage & Cost
Plating gives a uniform 5–25 µm film, good on complex, hidden surfaces but thin. Galvanizing gives 45–150 µm (e.g. Z275) with full edge and corner coverage — far longer life outdoors. Cost per piece favours plating; cost per square metre favours galvanizing. See also Black Steel Vs Galvanized Pipe.
Which to Choose
Use zinc plating for fasteners, brackets, springs and components where appearance and tight tolerance matter. Use galvanizing for beams, fences, piping and outdoor structures needing 20–50+ years of protection. Both beat bare steel — see Metal Corrosion Resistance Guide.

Galvanizing lasts far longer outdoors — its thicker coating and edge coverage deliver decades of sacrificial protection versus years for thin plating.
Yes. Zinc plating is the standard for fasteners and small parts where a uniform, cosmetic, corrosion-resistant finish is needed.
Yes. HXSCO supplies hot-dip galvanized steel (coil, tube, structurals) and can advise on zinc-plated components with mill certificates.
