Metal Hardfacing Guide: Weld Overlay & Wear-Resistant Coatings

Metal Hardfacing Guide: Weld Overlay & Wear-Resistant Coatings

Short answer: Hardfacing deposits a wear-resistant alloy onto a softer, tougher base metal so only the surface takes the abuse — extending the life of valves, digger teeth, rolls and pump parts far more cheaply than making the whole part from a solid exotic alloy.

What Hardfacing Is

Hardfacing (or weld overlay) lays a thin, hard, wear-resistant layer on a load-bearing base. It lets you combine a cheap tough substrate with a premium surface — our Cobalt Alloy Supplier (Stellite) and Wear Resistant Steel Supplier ranges are the usual donors. Filler choice follows Welding Consumables Guide.

Alloys & Where They Win

Stellite 6 (cobalt-chromium) resists wear and heat for valve seats and screws; iron-chromium-carbon carbide overlays fight abrasion on buckets and digger teeth; nickel-base hardfacings resist erosion in slurry and pumps; tungsten carbide survives the severest gouging in drills and mills; austenitic manganese absorbs impact on rails and jaws. Grade families are explained in Penjelasan Nilai Baja Tahan Karat.

Process & Quality

Overlay is applied by MIG, TIG, submerged-arc or plasma transferred arc, then finished by grinding. Preheat and interpass control avoid cracking on the base; welding detail is in How To Weld Stainless Steel and surface prep in Metal Surface Treatment Guide. Every lot ships with a mill certificate per Mill Test Certificate Guide.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

What is hardfacing?

Hardfacing (weld overlay) deposits a wear-resistant alloy onto a softer base metal so only the surface takes abrasion, heat or impact — extending part life cheaply.

Which alloy is best for wear?

It depends on the wear: Stellite for heat-plus-wear, iron-chromium-carbide for abrasion, tungsten carbide for severe gouging, manganese steel for impact.

Is hardfacing better than solid exotic alloy?

Usually yes for cost — you get the premium surface where it matters on a cheap tough base, instead of making the whole part from an expensive alloy.

Do you supply hardfaced parts?

Yes. HXSCO supplies hardfaced valves, seats, digger teeth and rolls in Stellite, carbide and wear-steel with mill certificates.
