6063 vs 6061: Side-by-Side Comparison
1. Strength
In T6 temper, 6061 delivers roughly 290–310 MPa tensile strength, while 6063-T6 reaches about 190–240 MPa. If your frame must carry heavy loads, withstand impact or support moving equipment, 6061 is the safer choice.
6063-T5 and 6063-T6 are adequate for window frames, curtain wall, furniture and decorative trim where loads are modest.
2. Extrudability
6063 is the industry standard for extrusion. It flows easily through dies, allowing thinner walls, sharper details and more complex hollow shapes without tearing. This reduces die wear and scrap.
6061 can be extruded, but its higher alloy content makes it harder to push. It is more commonly supplied as plate, sheet, bar or rod and then machined.
3. Surface Finish & Anodizing
6063 produces a very smooth, glossy surface ideal for clear or colored anodizing, powder coating and bright-dip finishes. That is why architects specify it for visible building components.
6061 anodizes well too, but the finish tends to be slightly more matte and may show minor streaking if not carefully controlled. For purely structural parts, appearance is usually less important.
4. Machinability
6061-T6 machines exceptionally well and is preferred for brackets, housings, valve bodies and precision parts. 6063 machines acceptably but can be gummier and less dimensionally stable during heavy machining.
5. Corrosion Resistance
Both alloys offer very good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and marine environments. 6061 is often chosen for marine structural parts; 6063 dominates architectural cladding in urban and coastal settings.
6. Cost Considerations
6063 is generally cheaper on an extruded-foot basis because it extrudes faster and uses simpler dies. 6061 costs more per kilogram and is more often purchased as plate or bar for machined parts.
