Inconel vs Monel: Which Nickel Alloy Should You Choose?

Inconel vs Monel: Which Nickel Alloy Should You Choose?

Short answer: Inconel is a nickel-chromium(-molybdenum) family built for high temperature and oxidising or chloride-acid service up to about 980 °C, while Monel is nickel-copper built for seawater, hydrofluoric acid and alkali at moderate temperature — choose Inconel for heat and Monel for marine and reducing chemistry at lower cost.

Two Different Alloy Systems

Inconel adds chromium (and often molybdenum and niobium) to nickel, forming a tough oxide film that survives red heat — the grade families are compared in Inconel 600 Vs 625 ve Inconel 625 Vs Inconel 718. Monel is roughly two-thirds nickel and one-third copper, which resists seawater and reducing acids but softens far earlier; grade detail is in Monel 400 Guide. Both sit in our Nickel Alloy Supplier programme alongside Hastelloy Guide grades.

Where Each Wins

Seçin Inconel for furnace parts, gas-turbine hardware, heat-exchanger tubing above 500 °C, flare tips and chloride-bearing acid service. Choose Monel for seawater piping and pump shafts, hydrofluoric acid, caustic evaporators and marine fasteners. Where the duty is only mildly corrosive, Duplex Stainless Steel Guide veya Stainless Steel 316 Properties material will do the job for a fraction of the price — Monel’s advantage is specifically velocity-tolerant seawater and HF service. Mixed-metal joints still need Galvanic Corrosion Guide planning.

Fabrication & Cost

Both work-harden quickly, so machining needs slow speeds, positive rake and rigid setups — see our Cnc Machining Supplier capability. Welding uses matching filler (ERNiCrMo-3 for 625, ERNiCu-7 for Monel 400) with low heat input; consumable selection is covered in Welding Consumables Guide. Inconel typically costs 1.5–2.5× Monel per kilogram, so specify Inconel only where temperature or oxidising chemistry genuinely demands it. Certification follows Mill Test Certificate Guide.

What is the main difference between Inconel and Monel?

Inconel is nickel-chromium(-molybdenum) for high-temperature and oxidising service to about 980 °C; Monel is nickel-copper for seawater, hydrofluoric acid and alkali at up to roughly 480 °C.

Is Inconel stronger than Monel?

Yes. Inconel 625 reaches around 830 MPa tensile versus roughly 550 MPa for Monel 400, and it retains strength at much higher temperature.

Which is better for seawater, Inconel or Monel?

Monel 400 is the traditional seawater choice for pumps, shafts and piping, especially at high flow velocity; Inconel 625 also performs well but costs considerably more.

Do you supply Inconel and Monel?

Yes. HXSCO supplies Inconel 600, 625 and 718 plus Monel 400 and K500 in sheet, plate, bar, pipe and fittings with mill certificates.
