Aluminum Extrusion Design Guide: Rules for Strong Profiles

Aluminum Extrusion Design Guide: Rules for Strong Profiles

Short answer: Good aluminum extrusion design balances wall thickness, symmetry and radii so the die fills evenly and the profile comes out straight and strong — 6063 for form and appearance, 6061/6082 for structural load.

Extrusion Design Basics

Extrusion pushes heated billet through a die to make a continuous profile. The design decides whether the die fills cleanly and the section stays straight. It belongs to our Aluminum Extrusion Supplier programme; alloy choice is in 6082 Vs 6061 Aluminum ve Aluminum 6063 Properties.

Rules That Make or Break a Profile

Keep walls reasonably uniform and at least ~1 mm (thicker for long runs) so the metal flows evenly; symmetry avoids warping; generous radii and fillets cut stress concentrations; and hollow sections need a weld seam that must be placed where it will not be loaded. Pick 6063-T5 for form and finish, 6061/6082-T6 for structural strength. Appearance finishes are in Anodized Aluminum Guide; protection in Metal Surface Treatment Guide.

Choosing Alloy & Joining

Use 6063 for architectural and T-slot frames, 6061/6082 for load-bearing structures, and 7075 only where strength dominates (see 7075 Vs 6061 Aluminum). Extruded aluminum welds well (see Alüminyum Nasıl Kaynak Yapılır) but welding softens the heat-affected zone, so design joints accordingly.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

What makes a good aluminum extrusion design?

A good design uses uniform walls (≥1 mm), symmetry for even flow, generous radii to avoid stress, and the right temper — 6063-T5 for form, 6061-T6 for strength.

Which aluminum alloy for structural extrusions?

Use 6061-T6 or 6082-T6 for structural load; 6063-T5 is best for architectural and decorative profiles where finish matters more than strength.

Do hollow aluminum extrusions have a weak seam?

Hollow profiles are formed with a weld seam (port-hole die); place it away from loaded areas and specify seam-quality checks for critical parts.

Do you supply custom aluminum extrusions?

Yes. HXSCO tools custom aluminum extrusion dies in 6063/6061/6082 with anodizing and mill certificates.
