Inconel vs Hastelloy: Which Nickel Alloy for Corrosion & Heat?

Inconel vs Hastelloy: Which Nickel Alloy for Corrosion & Heat?

Short answer: Inconel wins on high-temperature strength and oxidation while Hastelloy wins on broad acid corrosion — Inconel 625 and 718 for heat and stress, Hastelloy C-276 and C-22 for the harshest chemical and flue-gas duty.

Two Nickel Families

Inconel is a family of nickel-chromium alloys built for heat: 600 and Inconel 600 Vs 625 resist oxidation and scaling to high temperature, and 718 adds ageing strength for aero and turbine parts. Hastelloy is nickel-molybdenum-chromium built for corrosion: C-276 resists a very broad acid range, C-22 adds oxidising-acid resistance, and B-2 handles non-oxidising HCl. Both come from our Nickel Alloy Supplier programme, with the broader nickel picture in Inconel Vs Monel, Hastelloy Guide e Hastelloy Supplier.

Corrosion vs Heat Trade-off

If the limit is temperature and strength, Inconel — see the creep data in Metal Creep Guide — is usually the call. If the limit is a mixed acid or wet chloride, Hastelloy’s molybdenum gives broader immunity, and it also resists Pitting Corrosion Stainless Steel e Stress Corrosion Cracking better than most. Either way, unlike-metal joints need the care in Galvanic Corrosion Guide.

Selecting & Sourcing

We supply bar, plate, pipe and forged shapes in both families with filler guidance from Welding Consumables Guide and full traceability per Mill Test Certificate Guide. For a copper-nickel option in seawater, compare with Monel Supplier.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the difference between Inconel and Hastelloy?

Inconel is nickel-chromium, optimised for high-temperature strength and oxidation; Hastelloy is nickel-molybdenum-chromium, optimised for broad acid corrosion resistance.

Which is better for high temperature?

Inconel. Grades such as 600, 625 and 718 retain strength and resist scaling far better than Hastelloy, which is corrosion-focused rather than heat-focused.

Which resists acid better?

Hastelloy. C-276 resists a very wide acid range and C-22 adds oxidising-acid resistance, making it the choice for chemical and flue-gas desulphurisation duty.

Can you weld Inconel and Hastelloy?

Yes, with matching nickel-alloy consumables and controlled procedure; both are prone to hot cracking if contaminated, so cleanliness and the guidance in welding-consumables-guide matter.

Do you supply Inconel and Hastelloy?

Yes. HXSCO supplies Inconel 600/625/718 and Hastelloy C-276/C-22 in bar, plate, pipe and forgings with mill certificates.
