Maraging Steel: A Buyer Guide

Maraging Steel: A Buyer Guide

Short answer: Maraging steel is a low-carbon iron-nickel steel strengthened by aging with cobalt, molybdenum and titanium instead of quenching, reaching yield strengths of 1700 to 2400 MPa with high toughness and easy machining before aging, so 18Ni 300 and 350 serve aerospace, tooling and shafts where ordinary alloy or tool steel cannot hold the load, supplied as certified bar and plate with mill certificate.

What Maraging Steel Is

Aging gives strength without quench cracks, with the basis in our Alloy Steel Supplier and strength notes in our Metal Strength Comparison; hardness detail is in our Hardness Comparison.

Grades and Use

18Ni 300 serves molds and aero and 350 serves shafts and arms, with fatigue notes in our Metal Fatigue Guide and aerospace context in our Aerospace Guide.

Fabrication and Age

Bar is machined soft then aged for hardness, with the method in our Heat Treatment Guide and machining in our Machining Guide; finish is in our Surface Treatment Guide.

Quality and Sourcing

Maraging stock is checked by inspection, with methods in our Quality Inspection Guide; buyers confirm condition via our Mill Test Certificate Guide and pack per our Export Packing Guide.
