Electrical Steel Coil & Sheet: Forms, Thickness & How to Specify

Electrical Steel Coil & Sheet: Forms, Thickness & How to Specify

Short answer: Electrical steel is supplied mainly as full coil (0.10–0.65 mm) and as sheet or strip cut to length. Coils are slit to the lamination width; sheets are stamped or laser-cut into rotor and stator laminations. Standards include ASTM A876 / EN 10107 (GOES), ASTM A677 (NOES), and JIS C2552 (strip). An insulating coating is applied to every form to block eddy currents.

Forms of Electrical Steel

Electrical steel starts as hot-rolled band and is cold-reduced to thin gauge, then annealed and coated. The chart above summarizes the forms buyers receive. Full coil is the default for high-volume stamping; plaat suits cut parts and prototypes; strip is tight-tolerance material for precision laminations; bonderized (C5) sheet is used where laminations are bonded into a solid stack.

Thickness and Tolerance

Thinner gauges lower loss but cost more and punch harder. GOES is usually 0.23–0.35 mm; NOES spans 0.20–0.65 mm. State the nominal thickness and tolerance (often ±0.01–0.02 mm for strip) so your laminations stack to the designed core dimension.

Coatings and Insulation

Every electrical-steel form carries an insulating coating (C3–C6, or bondable C5) that resists eddy currents between laminations and adds a stable surface for cutting. Specify the coating class and whether you need laser-scribable or fully organic-free material for high-temperature annealing.

How to Specify a Quote

  • Type: GOES (CRGO) or NOES (CRNGO).
  • Grade & thickness: e.g. 27QG100, 0.50 mm 50W600.
  • Coating class: C3–C6 / C5 bondable.
  • Form & width: coil (slit to mm) or sheet (length × width).
  • Quantity & certs: with or without mill-test report.

Veelgestelde vragen

What forms does electrical steel come in?

Mainly full coil and sheet, plus tight-tolerance strip and bonderized (C5) sheet for bonded lamination stacks.

What thickness is electrical steel?

GOES typically 0.23–0.35 mm; NOES 0.20–0.65 mm. Thinner gauges lower loss but cost more.

What standards cover electrical steel?

Common standards are ASTM A876 / EN 10107 (GOES), ASTM A677 (NOES), and JIS C2552 (strip).

Why does electrical steel have a coating?

An insulating coating blocks eddy currents between laminations, lowering loss, and provides a stable surface for cutting or bonding.

How do I specify electrical steel for a quote?

Give the type (GOES/NOES), grade, thickness, coating class, form/width, quantity, and whether you need mill-test certificates.

Ready to source electrical steel?
