Stainless Steel Bar & Rod: Types, Grades & Applications

Stainless Steel Bar & Rod: Types, Grades & Applications

Short answer: Stainless steel bar and rod are long solid sections used for machining, fasteners, and structural parts. Round, square, hex, and flat bars are stocked in 304, 316, 430, free-machining 303, and duplex 2205. Grade and shape should follow the part’s strength, corrosion, and machining needs.

What Are Stainless Bars and Rods?

Bar and rod are solid long products. ‘Bar’ usually refers to smaller, precisely sized sections; ‘rod’ is often used for round sections of larger diameter. They are produced by hot rolling, forging, or cold drawing, then sometimes centerless ground or peeled for tight tolerances.

HXSCO stocks batang baja tahan karat in multiple shapes and grades for machining shops, fabricators, and equipment builders.

Bar Shapes

The chart above lists the main shapes. Round bar is the most common for shafts, fasteners, and turned parts. Square and flat bar suit frames, brackets, and structural members. Hex bar is used for nuts, bolts, and valve components. Angle and channel sections serve construction and marine structures.

Choosing a Grade

  • 304 / 304L: General-purpose, good corrosion resistance, easy to machine and weld.
  • 316 / 316L: For marine, chemical, and food-grade parts exposed to chlorides.
  • 303: Free-machining grade for high-volume CNC turning.
  • 430: Magnetic, cost-effective for indoor and decorative parts.
  • Duplex 2205: High strength where weight or corrosion resistance matters.

Machining and Tolerance

For precision machining, specify cold-drawn or centerless-ground bar with h11/h9 tolerance. 303 and 416 (not stainless but similar) machine fastest; 316 is tougher and needs sharp tooling and proper speeds. 316 sheet and bar are often paired in the same fabrication.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

What is the difference between stainless steel bar and rod?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Rod usually means round bar; bar covers all solid long shapes including square, hex, and flat.

Which grade of stainless bar should I use?

Use 304 for general purpose, 316 for chloride or marine exposure, 303 for high-volume machining, and 430 for magnetic or cost-sensitive indoor parts.

Can stainless steel bar be welded?

Yes. 304L and 316L weld well. For structural welds, low-carbon L-grades reduce sensitization risk after welding.

What sizes does stainless round bar come in?

Common diameters range from about 3 mm to 300 mm, supplied in mill lengths (usually 3–6 m) or cut to your required length.

Is stainless bar magnetic?

Austenitic 304 and 316 are generally non-magnetic in annealed condition. Ferritic 430 is magnetic, and cold working can make 304/316 slightly magnetic.
