Chrome Plating Guide: Decorative & Hard Chrome Coating

Chrome Plating Guide: Decorative & Hard Chrome Coating

Short answer: Chrome plating electro-deposits a layer of chromium from a chromic-acid bath: thin decorative chrome over nickel for brightness and light corrosion resistance, and thick hard chrome (10–250 µm) for extreme wear, low friction and the rebuild of worn or undersized shafts, moulds and hydraulics. Hard chrome is one of the hardest engineering coatings (800–1000 HV) and can be ground and honed back to size, but it needs a sound substrate and careful pre-treatment because the bath is aggressive and the deposit is stressed.
