Short answer: Stainless steel weight is calculated from density multiplied by volume. Austenitic 304 and 316 have a density of about 8.0 g/cm³; 430 is 7.7 and 201/duplex about 7.8. Use the grade density with the shape formula to estimate weight per meter for bars or per sheet for plates before requesting a quote.

The Basic Principle
Weight equals volume multiplied by density. The density depends on the grade, so always use the right value. As the chart shows, 304 and 316 are about 8.0 g/cm³, 430 is 7.7, and 201 and duplex 2205 are about 7.8.
Plate and Sheet Weight
For a rectangular plate or sheet, weight (kg) ≈ thickness(mm) ÷ 1000 × width(m) × length(m) × density(kg/m³). Example: a 6 mm × 1.5 m × 3 m 304 plate weighs 0.006 × 1.5 × 3 × 8000 = 216 kg.
HXSCO supplies 304 plate, 316 plateve 430 plate in standard and custom sizes; knowing the weight helps you estimate freight and handling.
Round Bar Weight per Meter
Round bar weight (kg/m) ≈ 0.00617 × diameter(mm)² × (density ÷ 7.85). For 304/316 at 8.0 density, the factor is about 0.00628. A 20 mm 304 round bar is roughly 0.00628 × 400 = 2.51 kg/m.
Pipe and Tube Weight
Pipe weight (kg/m) ≈ 0.02466 × wall(mm) × (outer diameter(mm) − wall(mm)). Use this for paslanmaz çeli̇k boru and tube when checking load and shipping.
Why Weight Matters for Quoting
Stainless is sold by weight, so an accurate estimate prevents surprises on the invoice and the truck. Share your calculated weight with HXSCO when you request a quote, and we will confirm against actual mill tolerance.
Sıkça Sorulan Sorular
Multiply the volume (in cubic meters) by the grade density. For plates use thickness × width × length × density; for round bar use 0.00617 × diameter² × (density/7.85).
About 8.0 g/cm³, or 8000 kg/m³. 316 is the same; 430 is 7.7, and 201 / duplex 2205 are about 7.8.
1 m × 1 m × 0.001 m × 8000 kg/m³ = 8 kg per square meter for 1 mm 304 sheet.
Roughly 2.5 kg/m using the round-bar formula with 304 density.
Slightly. Carbon steel is about 7.85 g/cm³; 304/316 stainless is about 8.0, so stainless is marginally heavier for the same volume.
