Stainless Steel Wire Guide: Grades, Tempers & Applications

Short answer: Stainless steel wire is drawn from 300- and 400-series rod into soft, spring or hard tempers for weaving, springs, fasteners, welding and medical use; 304/316 cover most duty, with 302/304 hard-drawn for springs and 321/347 for stabilised weld wire.

Grades & Tempers

Wire is the same alloys as bar, just drawn to fine diameters. Austenitic Stainless Steel 304 Properties (304/304L) and Stainless Steel 316 Properties (316/316L) lead for corrosion duty; 302/304 hard-drawn wire gives spring temper; 321/347 are stabilised for weld wire (see Welding Consumables Guide); ferritic 430 is the low-cost decorative option. The grade map is in Градации нержавеющей стали с пояснениями and the magnetic note in Metal Magnetism Guide.

Приложения

Stainless wire becomes woven mesh and screens (see Wire Mesh Supplier), springs, rope and cable cores (see Steel Wire Supplier), staples, needles, filter cloth and TIG filler. Formability follows Yield Strength Vs Tensile Strength; corrosion planning in Galvanic Corrosion Guide. Surface finish and passivation are in Stainless Steel Surface Finishes и Passivation Vs Pickling.
