Short answer: Coating thickness — the dry film thickness (DFT) — is measured with a magnetic gauge on steel and an eddy-current gauge on non-ferrous metals; both read the distance to the substrate without damaging the part, so you can confirm a paint, powder or galvanised layer meets its spec before it fails in service.

Why Coating Thickness Matters
Too thin and the coating gives no protection; too thick and it cracks, sags or wastes material. DFT is the single quality check behind every How To Prevent Metal Rust 그리고 Metal Surface Treatment Guide programme, and it is what inspectors record against the callout on the drawing. The same care applies to Anodized Aluminum Guide 그리고 Stainless Steel Surface Finishes.
Magnetic vs Eddy-Current Gauges
On ferrous steel a magnetic (Ferrous, F) gauge measures the pull-off or flux change to the substrate; on aluminium, stainless and nickel an eddy-current (Non-Ferrous, NF) gauge uses an induced field. Many probes auto-detect the base. Hot-dip zinc is checked by magnetic gauge or by weight per Galvanized Steel Supplier, and coated coil from our Steel Coil Supplier is verified at the line. Certification follows Mill Test Certificate Guide.
Procedure, Standards & Limits
Calibrate on a bare substrate shim, take readings across the area and compare to the specified DFT range (e.g. 60-80 µm for a typical epoxy). Standards such as ISO 2178 / 2360 and ASTM D7091 govern the method; for conformal coatings on electronics see Metal Corrosion Testing Guide. We can supply material with measured DFT and cross-check by Metal Ndt Guide where access allows.

자주 묻는 질문
DFT is the thickness of a cured coating (paint, powder, zinc) measured from the substrate surface to the top of the film — the key value specifiers control for protection and appearance.
Use a magnetic (Ferrous) gauge on steel and an eddy-current (Non-Ferrous) gauge on aluminium, stainless or nickel; combined probes auto-switch between them.
A calibrated gauge is typically within ±3% of reading or ±2.5 µm on a smooth surface; rough profiles and curved parts need more readings and care.
Yes — powder coating is measured the same way after cure, with eddy-current or magnetic gauges depending on the substrate, and checked against the specified DFT window.
