Steel Coil Buyers Guide: Hot-Rolled, Cold-Rolled and Galvanized

Steel Coil Buyers Guide: Hot-Rolled, Cold-Rolled and Galvanized

Short answer: Buy steel coil by first choosing the process – hot-rolled for tubes and structurals, cold-rolled for smooth panels, galvanized for corrosion resistance – then fixing thickness, width and coating, with the supplier options in our Coil Supplier and quality checks in our Steel Coil Supplier page.

Choose the Process

Hot-rolled coil is cheaper and rougher; cold-rolled is smoother and tighter in tolerance; galvanized adds a zinc layer for corrosion resistance, with corrosion data in our Corrosion Resistance Guide and grades in our Carbon Steel Supplier.

Specify Thickness and Width

State thickness in mm, width in mm and coil weight, plus tolerance class; the planning is in our MOQ and Lead Time Guide and sizing in our Steel Sheet Buyers Guide.

Coating and Surface

For galvanized, specify Z coating mass (Z100 to Z275); for pre-painted, specify colour and film; finish options are in our Surface Finishing Guide.

Verify the Mill Certificate

Confirm chemistry, yield, tensile and coating with the MTC per our Mill Test Certificate Guide, and add third-party checks from our Third-Party Inspection Guide.
