Titanium Grades Guide: How to Choose the Right Grade

Titanium Grades Guide: How to Choose the Right Grade

Short answer: Pick titanium by service, not just price. Grade 1/2 (commercially pure) give the best corrosion resistance and formability for chemical and marine use; Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) adds strength for aerospace and structural parts; Grade 7 resists crevice corrosion; Grade 23 (ELI) is the surgical implant grade. Match the grade to environment, strength, and certification needs.

Start With the Environment

For corrosive or marine service where formability matters most, commercially pure Grade 1/2 are the safe, weldable choice. If you also need crevice-corrosion resistance in hot brine, step up to Grade 7 (palladium-added). Where strength-to-weight rules – airframes, engine parts, implants – Grade 5 dominates.

Strength vs Formability Trade-off

The chart maps grades to their priority. Pure grades are easy to form and weld but limited in strength; alpha-beta alloys like Grade 5 roughly double the strength at the cost of harder machining. Grade 23 keeps Grade 5’s strength with extra-low interstitial content for fracture-critical medical parts.

Certification and Traceability

Aerospace and medical jobs require full mill-test reports, heat traceability, and often AMS or ASTM specs. Tell your supplier the applicable standard (ASTM B265, AMS 4911, etc.) so the material arrives audit-ready.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is the most common titanium grade?

Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the most common alloy grade for aerospace and structural use; Grade 2 is the most common commercially pure grade.

Which titanium grade is best for corrosion resistance?

Commercially pure Grade 1/2 offer the best general corrosion resistance; Grade 7 adds palladium for superior crevice corrosion resistance in hot chlorides.

What is Grade 23 titanium used for?

Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is the extra-low-interstitial implant grade used for surgical implants, screws, and critical medical devices.

Is Grade 5 titanium stronger than Grade 2?

Yes. Grade 5 roughly doubles the tensile strength of Grade 2 but is harder to machine and form.

How do I specify titanium for a quote?

Give the grade, form, dimensions, quantity, and any standard or certification (ASTM B265, AMS, mill-test report).
