Metal for Food & Pharmaceutical Processing: Hygienic Grade Selection

Metal for Food & Pharmaceutical Processing: Hygienic Grade Selection

Short answer: Food and pharma lines favour 316L stainless for pipe, tanks and process surfaces because it is cleanable, low-carbon and chloride-resistant; 304L serves frames and less aggressive surfaces, duplex and Hastelloy handle aggressive duty, and high-purity copper appears in traditional brewery use. Surface finish and passivation are as important as the alloy.

Why 316L Dominates

Low-carbon 316L resists the chlorides in clean-in-place (CIP) chemicals and welds without sensitising, so it is the default for sanitary pipe and tanks. It is stocked by our Stainless Steel Pipe Supplier and covered by our 316 Properties Guide 그리고 Passivation Guide.

Surfaces, Finish and Passivation

Hygienic surfaces need a smooth, electropolished or 2B/BA finish with no crevices. Finishing and passivation are detailed in our Electropolishing Guide, Surface Finishes Guide 그리고 Surface Treatment Guide; weld quality is checked per our Welded Tube Guide.

Aggressive and Specialty Duty

Duplex 2205 serves aggressive CIP and high-pressure sanitary duty (our Duplex Supplier); Hastelloy C-276 handles corrosive API and biopharma streams (our Hastelloy Supplier). High-purity copper (our Copper Supplier) appears in traditional brewery and stillage use.

Standards and Traceability

Specify the sanitary standard (3A, ASTM A270, EN) and require full traceability; chemistry and tolerances are documented by our Mill Test Certificate Guide 그리고 Tolerances Fits Guide. Avoid galvanic couples with our Galvanic Corrosion Guide.

자주 묻는 질문

Which stainless for food contact?

316L is the standard; 304L for less aggressive surfaces.

Why low carbon (L)?

Prevents weld sensitization and intergranular corrosion.

Is passivation required?

Yes — it restores the passive film on hygienic surfaces.

When use Hastelloy?

For aggressive pharma/API streams beyond stainless.

Is copper food-safe?

High-purity copper is used traditionally, e.g. breweries.
