Investment Casting vs Die Casting: Process & Selection Compared

Investment Casting vs Die Casting: Process & Selection Compared

Short answer: Investment (lost-wax) casting makes fine, complex steel and stainless parts in low-to-medium volume with no parting line; die casting forces molten aluminium, zinc or magnesium into a steel die for very high-volume, thinner, cheaper non-ferrous parts — the choice follows material, volume and detail.

Two Casting Routes

Investment casting coats a wax pattern in ceramic, melts the wax out and pours steel, stainless or cobalt alloys — our Casting Supplier programme. Die casting injects molten aluminium, zinc or magnesium into a reusable steel die under pressure. Both are net-shape; the broader choice against forging is in Forging Vs Casting and against machining in Metal Stamping Vs Machining.

Detail, Material and Volume

Investment casting gives the finest surface and thinnest features in ferrous alloys, at low tooling cost but slower cycle — ideal for valves, impellers and small complex steel parts. Die casting is fast and cheap per part but limited to low-melting non-ferrous metals and high volume; it needs an expensive die. Choosing

Specify investment casting for complex steel/stainless parts at low-to-medium volume where finish and detail matter; specify die casting for high-volume aluminium, zinc or magnesium components where unit cost dominates. HXSCO supplies both routes plus the base Aluminum Supplier, Carbon Steel Supplier 그리고 Stainless Steel Supplier alloys, with certificates per Mill Test Certificate Guide.

자주 묻는 질문

What is the difference between investment and die casting?

Investment (lost-wax) casting makes fine complex steel/stainless parts in low-to-medium volume; die casting forces aluminium/zinc/magnesium into a steel die for very high-volume non-ferrous parts.

Which casting gives finer detail?

Investment casting gives the finest detail and no parting line; die casting is detailed but shows a parting line and is limited to non-ferrous metals.

Is investment casting more expensive?

Per part it can be, but its tooling is cheaper and it suits low volume; die casting needs a costly die amortised over huge quantities.

Do you supply both casting types?

Yes. HXSCO supplies investment and die castings in steel, stainless, aluminum, zinc and magnesium with mill certificates.
