Short answer: Stainless steel pipe is designed to carry fluids and gases and is sized by nominal pipe size and schedule. Stainless steel tube is measured by exact outer diameter and wall thickness and is used for structural, mechanical, and appearance applications.

Definitions
Pipe is a hollow section used primarily to transport fluids, gases, and slurries. It is sized by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule (wall thickness), and is almost always round.
튜브 is a hollow section used for structural, mechanical, heat-exchange, and appearance purposes. It is measured by exact outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness, and can be round, square, rectangular, or oval.
How They Are Measured
A 2-inch stainless steel pipe does not actually measure 2 inches on the OD; the nominal size relates to historical internal diameter. The actual OD and wall thickness depend on the schedule (Sch 5, 10, 40, 80, etc.).
A 2-inch stainless steel tube actually measures 2.000 inches OD (within tolerance), and the wall thickness is stated directly in mm or inches. This precision is why tube is preferred for structural and mechanical work.
Seamless vs Welded
Both pipe and tube come in seamless and welded forms. Seamless products have no longitudinal weld and are preferred for high-pressure and critical applications. Welded products are more economical for lower-pressure structural, decorative, and general service use.
HXSCO supplies stainless steel seamless pipe and tube as well as welded tube in 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 430, and 201 grades.
일반적인 애플리케이션
- Pipe: process piping, water lines, oil and gas transport, pressure systems.
- Tube: handrails, frames, heat exchangers, instrument tubing, furniture, automotive components.
Which One Should You Order?
If you are designing a fluid system, order pipe by nominal size and schedule and verify pressure ratings. If you need precise OD, tight tolerances, structural strength, or non-round shapes, order tube by exact dimensions.

자주 묻는 질문
Strength depends on wall thickness, diameter, and grade, not on the word pipe or tube. Pipe is designed for pressure; tube often has tighter dimensional tolerances.
Yes, in low-pressure hydraulic, pneumatic, and sanitary systems where precise OD and clean surfaces matter. High-pressure pipelines usually use pipe.
Schedule 40 is a standard wall thickness. A 2-inch Sch 40 pipe has a defined OD and heavier wall than Sch 10, giving it a higher pressure rating.
Seamless pipe is extruded from a solid billet and has no weld seam. Welded pipe is formed from strip and welded longitudinally. Seamless is preferred for high pressure and critical service.
Square and rectangular hollow sections are usually called tube or box section, not pipe. HXSCO can supply welded square and rectangular stainless steel tube on request.
