What Is Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel?
Duplex stainless steels combine austenitic and ferritic microstructures. 2205 contains about 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum, plus nitrogen. The mixed structure gives higher strength and better stress-corrosion resistance than standard austenitic grades.
Common standards include ASTM A240, ASTM A790, EN 10088-2, and ASTM A182. Duplex plate, pipe, and forgings are used in the most demanding industries.
Strength Advantage
2205 has a typical minimum yield strength of about 450 MPa (65 ksi), compared with about 205–290 MPa for 304/316. This allows thinner sections, less weight, and longer unsupported spans in structural and pressure applications.

The high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content give 2205 excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking. It outperforms 316 in seawater and many chemical environments, although it costs more.

Choose 2205 when you need high strength plus chloride resistance. Choose 316 when moderate strength and good general corrosion resistance are enough and budget is tighter.
2205 requires more care during welding and heat treatment than 316. Proper filler metal, heat input control, and post-weld inspection are important.
